Carrying Kids Safely in Taxis, Coaches, Buses, and Minibuses The rules for seat belts and child seats in taxis, coaches, buses, and minibuses are different from those in regular cars. Still, transport companies that take kids in these vehicles have a responsibility to keep them safe. This means they need to ensure their drivers are qualified, their vehicles are safe, and that the trips are well-planned. Kids should be in a proper child seat from birth until they reach at least 135cm (4’5”) tall or turn 12, whichever comes first. After that, they should use a seat belt if available, but it’s better for them to stick with a booster seat until they hit 150cm (5’), like in some European countries. Child car seats are super effective at keeping young passengers safe. Kids in the right car seat are way less likely to get hurt or worse compared to those who aren’t secured or just using a seat belt. Regular seat belts aren’t as effective for kids since they’re made for adults. A smaller child might slip under the lap belt because it sits too high, or the shoulder strap could dig into their neck, both of which can lead to serious injuries.
