Guide - How Taxi Prices Are Calculated

The cost of a taxi fare to or from Newcastle Airport depends on various factors that can vary among different taxi companies. Understanding these factors will help you plan your trip and avoid any surprises.

Key Factors That Affect Taxi Fare:

  1. Distance
The distance between your pickup point and Newcastle Airport or your drop-off location significantly impacts the fare. The further the distance, the higher the fare for your Newcastle Airport taxi.

  2. Demand (Surge Pricing)
During peak hours or periods of high demand, taxi fares may increase. This is known as surge pricing and typically occurs when there are fewer available taxis or during busy times like holidays or rush hours.

  3. Time of Day & Week
Taxi companies often have different pricing tariffs depending on the time of day or day of the week:

    • Day Tariff: Standard rates during regular hours.

    • Night Tariff: Higher rates usually apply between 6 pm and 6 am or 7 pm and 7 am, depending on the taxi company.

    • Weekend Tariff: Rates may be higher during weekends, typically starting from Friday at 5 pm until Monday at 6 am.

    • Public Holidays: Expect an extra surcharge on Bank Holidays or other public holidays.

  4. Wait Time Charge
There are two types of wait time charges:

    • In-Car Wait Charge: This is when the taxi meter continues to run while the vehicle is stationary (e.g., at traffic lights or in heavy traffic).

    • Out-of-Car Wait Charge: This is applied when the driver is waiting for you, such as during a stop-off or if your flight is delayed. These charges may vary depending on the taxi company.

  5. Vehicle Type & Size
The type and size of the vehicle you choose can affect the fare:

    • Size: Vehicles with more seating or luggage capacity, like 6-seater MPVs or 8-seater minibuses, may cost more than standard 4-seat taxis.

    • Type: Executive or premium vehicles (e.g., Mercedes) are often charged at a higher rate compared to standard taxis.

  6. Taxi Company Pricing
Different taxi companies may have their own pricing systems. For example, one company might charge different rates for mileage, waiting times, or night tariffs. It’s always advisable to check online or ask for a quote in advance to know what to expect.

  7. Pick-up and Drop-off Charge
Different taxi companies may include parking charges in the quotes and some do not, when traveling to or from an Airport, it is always best to check. Our rates include these charges.

Top Tip:

Use a company that offers a set fare and doesn't charge waiting fees. That way, the price you're quoted will be exactly what you pay, with no surprises.
